The purpose of attic insulation is to keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer during the winter. One of the easiest places in a house to insulate is often the attic. Therefore you have to determine the right level of insulation that you need.

One quick way to tell if you need more insulation is to examine your attic. If your insulation is just level with or below your floor joists you should add more. If you can’t see any of the floor joists because the insulation is covering them, you probably have enough and adding more may just be unnecessary. It is important that the insulation be distributed equally with no gaps or low spots. If your attic insulation covers your joists and is distributed evenly, there probably is enough already.
