Why buy Organic Milk; it’s so expensive.   Or is Organic Milk to expensive?  I had been buying regular fat free milk for my family and to cook with in my recipes.  I could not stand drinking it myself, because it was affecting my health.  I was also having a problem with its self life in my refrigerator; it would often go off (not so nice taste) before I was able to use it up.  To add insult to injury; it just did not taste right to a person who was raised on fresh cows milk from the family cow.

I have been making some very effective health decisions in the foods I chose to feed my family and self (of course).  Choosing to buy Organic Milk was one of these changes.  I discovered that organic milk was cost effective and low and behold it had positive effects on my digestion.  Now I am able to buy fat free milk that does not have a flat watery taste and even has a creamy feel on my tongue.  The shelf life is extended, so that the milk is used long before the do not use date.  I do not know what is going on with regular milk, but from now on I am choosing to buy Organic no matter the cost.  I have feeling the savings I realize from buying tummy medicine and going to the doctor more than compensates for that choice, if just feeling better is not the added bonus.

Water LiliesHealth Insurance is a Green Issue.  Have you ever sat down and thought of the true cost of Health Insurance?  I have and I am distressed at what it is costing in monetary and human resources. The only people who benefit are the people who can afford the cost to protect their accumulated wealth.  What about the other 95% of the population who need access to health care and cannot afford it?  Think about it.  You or your employer pays hundreds of dollars each month for coverage that takes away from the income that is needed to pay for basic housing, food and clothing.  To afford the expense of carrying insurance there needs to be a high deductible that has to be paid for illness out of the family’s disposable income, so pray that you never become sick.  To add insult to injury the only people who profit from all this expense is the insurance companies.

Is there a better way of looking at how we provide health care?  I think there is.  We need to start thinking of health care as a community cost.  It needs to be an income tax just like social security, but the difference would be that the low income people would have as much access to quality health with out paying one more penny than the wealthy tax payer, but the wealthy tax payer would pay for the working mans health.  The interesting thing is that assets that are wasted in selling, using and creating a profit for the insurance companies would be captured and channeled to the benefit of those who need quality health, but currently cannot afford it.  Right now the way quality health is provided is a total mismanagement of resources and great contributor to the wasting of assets and the lives of those we love.

My younger sister is an environmentally and politically conscious young lady.  She is a longtime vegan and I really celebrate her strong convictions.  I also know that because she lives in a small town, she has difficulty finding fair trade and organic clothes.  I’m certain she’s been wearing the same clothes for the last year and a half.

I was surfing the web and I found this great stylish track-inspired jacket for her.  Best of all, it’s an organic coat, so it fits my sister’s clothing requirements.  I’m getting ready to send it out to her, but there isn’t a doubt in my mind that she’ll love it – not only because it’s a great jacket, but also because no chemicals had been used in the process of production.

organic cottonOrganic cotton is grown using different methods than conventional cotton and is often produced for the purpose of organic clothing.  In ordered to be labeled as organic, growers, producers, and manufacturers must follow strict guidelines.  Everything about the process is inspected carefully.  If any of the standards or guidelines are not met, then the cotton cannot be certified as organic.

The process of making organic cotton begins with the soil.  Most organic farmers use soil that is extra rich in nutrients.  When the soil is healthy, the plant will be healthy and more resistant to problems that would otherwise require chemicals like pesticides or herbicides.

Farmers create nutritious soil by crop rotation and cover cropping.  Crop rotation is a practice in which different crops are rotated among the same fields.  By varying the crops in each field, over time, it enriches the soil with different nutrients that help sustain the cotton crop the next time it is planted.  Cover cropping is a system of planting crops that cover the soil and help prevent erosion.  It also provides nitrogen for the upcoming cotton crop if it is tilled into the soil prior to planting or it can reduce the release of nutrients if planted after the cotton.

There are numerous benefits to growing organic cotton.  The main benefit is that there are fewer chemicals in the environment.  Research has proven that exposure to harsh chemicals like pesticides can cause mild problems such as headaches and nausea.  Prolonged exposure can cause more serious illnesses like cancer or problems with our hormones, nervous system, reproductive system and immune system.  Goods grown organically also retain more of their natural nutritional value.

organic bath robeFor my birthday this year, my girlfriend bought me an organic bath robe and I have to say that it’s the most comfortable bath robe I’ve ever worn.  Now even though I’ve only worn a bath robe a total of three times (one of which was when I was 6 years old), I know comfort and I’m in love with this bamboo bath robe.  The material isn’t at all abrasive and if I could get away with wearing it to work, I would.

Purchasing fair trade clothing may seem like something that it’s a trend, but it should be a long-term commitment that can have some really positive effects.  Most commercially available clothes are manufactured in sweatshops; even brands that are advertised as sweatshop-free and made in the United States (such as American Apparel), have run into accusations of discouraging their employees from unionizing.

Fair trade clothing ensures that you can be fashionable without having your ethics compromised in anyway.  In the end, it’s all a fair game.
